Development for the People of Cambodia
The Organisation for the Development for the People of Cambodia ("DPC") is a not for profit NGO that started its work when a community was forcibly evicted from Phnom Penh City to Andong, a site near to the airport. When the villagers arrived at the new location, they had nothing; no shelter, no food or water, and no help from the government. Some NGOs stepped in to help with basic needs such as food and healthcare, and the villagers were given tarpaulin tents to call home. Abraham Hang, DPC's President, works tirelessly with the villagers to try and make life easier in Andong's slum community and to offer some hope for the future. He has forged partnerships with numerous NGOs in order to bring healthcare, clean water and education to Andong's residents and the children - who are denied access to public schools - now have their own community school. Volunteer Cambodia! recruits volunteers to help in Andong by offering their services as English teachers and medical/ healthcare professionals. Placements with DPC can be short-term or long-term (although a minimum commitment of four weeks is preferred for teaching roles) and can be offered on either a part-time or full-time basis.
